Women's Basketball Signs Three Players

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball coach Betsy Blose has announced the signing of three players to national letters-of-intent on Tuesday. The three are 6-0 forward Jeannie Buckner of Johns Island, S.C., 5-8 guard Brittany Gwyn of High Point and 5-2 guard Tacey Tammell of Robbinsville.

"I am excited about the 2011 class," declared Blose. "We have signed three high-quality players who will make an immediate impact in their freshman year."

Buckner has been home-schooled and played for Humanities of Sciences Academy last year.  She averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds per game last season.

"Jeannie Buckner is a player who fell under the radar," stated Blose. "We are certainly thrilled that our paths crossed. She is the first home-schooled student-athlete I have recruited and coached. Jeannie can play the small forward or power forward position. She will bring height and versatility to our perimeter game."

Gwyn will be the fourth player from High Point Central to play in the Bulldog program.  She averaged 12.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game last season.

"I love the guards who came out of High Point Central High School," declared Blose. "We signed another in Brittany Gwyn. She can score in different ways. Brittany can take you off the dribble; she can hit a mid-range jumper and knock down a three-pointer. However, her biggest strength may be on the defensive end. She will most likely be our "defensive stopper."

Tammell has enjoyed a stellar career at Robbinsville HS. Last season, she averaged 21.3 points and three rebounds per game for the Knights.

"We signed the point guard we wanted in Tacey Tammell," admitted Blose. "She is a go-getter. Tacey never takes a possession off and is a true point guard who sets the tone offensively and defensively with her work ethic and competitive spirit. We love the way she plays and so will our fans."
