Shepard?s Last Second 3-Pointer Lifts Bulldogs Over Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- With 1.7 seconds left and the score tied at 75-75, UNC Asheville guard Kendall Shepard took an inbounds pass from teammate Grace Blaylock and hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Bulldogs a three point victory over Campbell on Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena on the campus of the Camels.
"I'm really proud of how hard we played and how we stuck together," said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. "This win ranks right up there with some wins we've had. Assistant coach Curtis Metten drew up the play we ran and we drew up the play for Kendall to be the one to take the shot."
Lindsey Thompson led the Blue & White in scoring with 24 points with Shepard chipping in 19, none bigger than her last second shot. Forward Kelli Riles recorded here second double-double in as many games with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Blaylock scored 11 to help the Bulldogs improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Camels were led on offense by Tonisha Baker who tallied 20 points in the three-point loss. Kate Cloxton had 11 and Katelyn Bass finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Campbell falls to 0-3 on the year with the loss.
The Bulldogs began the game on a 9-2 run over the first five and a half minutes. Campbell would get hot from behind the 3-point arc to pull to within three points of Asheville at 22-19 with just over nine minutes left in the first half.
Campbell tied the game at 29 points apiece at the 5:01 mark on a Tonisha Baker trey from the left side of the arc. The two teams would trade buckets back and forth before the Blue & White was able to take a 40-37 lead into halftime.
Kelli Riles posted 11 first half points to go with six rebounds while Lindsey Thompson recorded 10 points to help the Bulldogs cause.
Campbell took a second half lead at 43-42 just minutes into the second half and extended it to 45-42 before the Bulldogs retook the advantage on a Thompson 3-pointer at the 17:31 mark. Neither the Camels nor the Bulldogs could take an advantage over the next six minutes as the score was tied 52-52 with 11:42 to go in the game.
Asheville took a 64-61 lead over the Camels before a 9-0 Campbell run put them ahead 70-64 with just under minutes left to play. Trailing 75-73 with just 1:03 left Thompson tied the game on a pair of free throws before Shepard's dagger sealed the win for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will host USC Upstate in their next contest in the friendly confines of the Justice Center. The game is set for Tuesday evening with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
