11.16.2010 | Women's Basketball
Asheville (1-0) opened the season with a hard-fought 78-65 victory over Montreat College Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs led from start to finish as they jumped out to a 17-1 lead. Asheville could never quite put the Cavaliers away but managed to keep them at bay most of the game.
"We played well at times against Montreat and it's always good to get a win," commented Bulldog coach Betsy Blose. "We had a lot of people step up and play well. There's still plenty for us to work on right now but Saturday was a step in the right direction."
Asheville faces a Western Carolina (0-2) squad that has not won this year but played two good teams in Richmond and East Carolina.
"Western Carolina played well and came close to winning both games," said Blose. "They had a good team and our very tough on the boards. We're going to have to play very well to have a chance at winning."
The Bulldogs had three players establish career highs on Saturday against Montreat. Kendall Shepard tallied 22 points, while Lindsey Thompson added 21. Sophomore guard Breaira Barksdale finished with 13 points. Kelli Riles pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds.
