ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Guards Kendall Shepard, Lindsey Thompson and Breaira Barksdale each tallied career highs in points while forward Kelli Riles pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds as the Bulldogs defeated Montreat College 78-65 in the season opener for UNC Asheville at the Justice Center on Saturday afternoon.
“It's a good win at home,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We would build a couple of good leads but Montreat wouldn't go away. We had some breakdowns defensively but overall we weathered the storm and that's what young teams have to do.”
Shepard posted 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting while converting 7-of-11 free throws. Thompson converted 9-of-15 field goal attempts including 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc to earn a career-best 21 points while Barksdale scored 13 to add to the Bulldogs' total.
The Cavaliers were led on offense by Chaecie Bullock who scored 20 points, converting five 3-pointers in the process. Kaitlyn Clontz scored 16 while Alicia Wallace pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Myhkiea Russell led all players with seven assists and Bullock chipped in three steals on defense.
Shepard recorded four assists for the Blue & White with Thompson and Grace Blaylock posting three assists each.
Asheville took an early advantage in the first half and pushed its lead out as much as 18 points before finally taking a 39-28 lead into halftime. The Cavaliers did a better job of staying with the Bulldogs in the second half and cut the lead to eight points at 71-63 with 2:58 remaining in the game.
However, Asheville was able to keep Montreat at arm's length the rest of the way to earn the 78-65 victory, holding the Cavaliers to only two points over the final three minutes.
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Wednesday, Nov. 17, when they host mountain rival Western Carolina at the Justice Center in a game that is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
