Asheville (5-8, 1-0 BSC) opened league play with an impressive 59-48 victory over a strong Coastal Carolina squad Saturday afternoon. Lindsey Montgomery continued her stellar play with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Chioma Okolia added 11 points, while Kendall Shepard finished with 10 points and six assists.
The Bulldogs' defense was outstanding in the game as they limited the Chanticleers to just 34 percent shooting from the field (19-of-56). Asheville also played with poise down the stretch. The Bulldogs shot 81 percent from the free throw line (17-of-21) in the second half.
"Saturday was a great win against a good Coastal Carolina team," commented Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "Our defense was very good for 40 minutes, and we received contributions from everyone throughout the game."
Another challenge awaits the Bulldogs on Monday when Charleston Southern invades Justice Center. The Lady Bucs are 6-6 on the year and 0-1 in league play. They possess one of the best three-point shooting attacks in the nation. CSU is third nationally in three-pointers made with 9.5 per game and have 114 on the year. Earlier this season, the Lady Bucs made 17 in a near upset of national power North Carolina.
"Charleston Southern is a good team that can really, really hurt you from the three-point line," said Blose. "We're going to have to play very good defense again to have a chance to beat them. They can score points in a hurry."
After Monday's game, Asheville hits the road for four straight league games before returning home to entertain North Carolina Central on Jan. 22.
NOTES - Lindsey Montgomery has four double-doubles in the last six games...the Bulldogs leads the series 27-22 and won both meetings last season but both were close games that Asheville won by four points each time (70-66 in Charleston and 87-83 in overtime at Justice Center)...the Bulldogs are trying to go 2-0 in league play for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
