ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team looks to end a six-game Big South Conference losing streak on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs travel to Winthrop Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The game will be video-streamed and can be seen at www.bigsouthsports.com.
Asheville (6-13, 1-6 BSC) is looking for some momentm after struggling through the first part of conference play. The Bulldogs opened league play on Jan. 2 with an impressive 59-48 victory over Coastal Carolina but has not been able to win a league contest since that game. Asheville does have a win in that stretch and that came last Friday night when the Bulldogs downed non-conference foe North Carolina Central 64-58.
"We need to be more consistent in all phases of the game," commented Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "We're not playing good enough defensively and struggling to score points."
Junior forward Lindsey Montgomery continues to have a great season for the Bulldogs and has been a real bright spot. "Monty" is averaging a double-double with a 12.6 scoring average and 10.6 rebounding mark. She leads the Big South in rebounding and has been ranked nationally in that category. The Shelby native has posted eight double-doubles on the year.
Junior guard Chioma Okoli has played well recently. She scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds against N.C. Central last Friday night.
Winthrop (6-13, 1-5 BSC) has struggled in league play, as well. However, the Eagles will be a formidable challenge on Saturday.
"Winthrop graduated some key players from last year and have a young team," stated Blose. "We're going to have to play well to beat them. They're always tough to beat at home."
