CULLOWHEE, N.C. - UNC Asheville sophomore Eliud Chirchir finished in fourth place to highlight the Bulldogs performance at the Western Carolina Invitational Friday night.

Chirchir had a time of 16:19 in the 5K race and helped Asheville finish in third place in the meet. Big South rival Winthrop won the four-team meet with 34 points, followed by Western Carolina in second with 37 points. The Bulldogs edged out Gardner-Webb for third place with 77 points, while the Runnin' Bulldogs had 78.

"We rested some of our top runners today from both squads so we finished about where I expected," commented Asheville coach Jesse Norman. "The highlight of the day was the performances by Eliud and Alyska. They ran very well and are only going to get better."

On the women's side, Asheville finished in fourth place with 101 points. Freshman Alyska Kalmeijer led the Bulldogs as she came in 14th place with a time of 12:23 over the two-mile course.

The Bulldog men had Kent Rankin finish in 13th place (16:45), followed by Jay Barringer (16:49) in 14th. Adam Schnapp was in 22nd place (18:13) with freshman Chris Murray taking 24th (19:27).
