Cross Country Teams Both Finish 4th at Big South Preview

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country programs both finished in fourth place at the Big South Conference Preview Meet at Shady Oaks Saturday morning.
"I was pretty pleased at how we performed on Saturday," stated Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. "Both teams ran well and finished fourth. We still have some work to do but we had a good effort today."
The men's team finished in fourth place with 104 points. Sophomore Eliud Chirchir continued his impressive work in the first part of the season with an eighth-place finish. He finished the 8K course in a time of 27:14.
Sam Maynard came in 20th place with a time of 28:11. He was followed by Kent Rankin in 22nd place. Rankin had a time of 28:24. Jay Barringer was right behind Rankin in 23rd at a time of 28:27. Adam Schnapp took 31st with a time of 29:59. Adam Vick came in 33rd at a time of 30:22.
The women's team came in fourth place with 110 points. The Bulldogs had two freshman runners finish in the top 10. Melanie Kulesz took ninth place with a time of 19:49 over the 5K course. Claire Powell was right behind her in 10th at 19:50.
Freshman Kylie Smith finished in 29th with a time of 21:13. Freshman Alyska Kalmeijer took 30th at a time of 21:19. Mackenzie Wheaton came in 32th (21:29), while Rachel Ambrosia finished 33rd (21:45). Senior Katie Olert was 36th (22:22).
Both teams will be in action again at the Charlotte Invitational on Oct. 2.
