Volleyball Whips Western Carolina 3-0; Another Double-Double for Benorden

ASHEVILLE, N.C.  - Kelsey Benorden had 10 kills, 10 digs and six service aces as UNC Asheville downed mountain rival Western Carolina 3-0 in college volleyball action at Justice Center Wednesday night. The Bulldogs won the match 25-13, 25-19, 25-17.

Asheville enjoyed a great night serving as it recorded a season-high 12 service aces. Senior libero Raquel Miotto had three service aces and a game-high 17 digs. It was Benorden's third double-double of the year.

The Bulldogs had three players with six kills each in Lauren Ficker, Cindi Miller and Jenna Dover.

The Catamounts (0-4) were led by Amanda Kerr with eight kills. WCU had a tough night with its hitting attack. The visitors had 25 kills with 24 attack errors for a percentage of .012.

"We really served the ball well tonight and did that from the start," stated UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "I thought we played with a great deal of intensity, and our crowd was just tremendous this evening. This is a big win for our program. Hopefully, we'll keep building on tonight and keep getting better."

The tone was set in the first set. Senior Brooke Holliday served the first four points of the game for the Bulldogs as they quickly led 4-0 and cruised to the first set 25-13.

In the second set, the Catamounts played better and had the lead on three occasions. But a 5-0 run midway through the set led the serving of Benorden got the Bulldogs moving. She had three straight service aces to help spark the 5-0 to give Asheville a 20-14 lead. Kerr helped keep WCU close but the Bulldogs pulled away to a 25-19 win.

In the third set, there were four ties and two lead changes but Asheville began to pull away late in the set. Leading 17-14, the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run helped by two kills from Benorden and two attack errors to build the margin to 21-14. Asheville won the game and match 25-17.

The Bulldogs play next at the USC Upstate Classic this weekend. They'll play N.C. State on Friday at 5 p.m.
