Women's Basketball Inks Point Guard from Baltimore

05.07.2009 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville women's basketball coach Betsy Blose has announced the signing of 5-6 point guard Breaira Barksdale from Baltimore to a National Letter-of-Intent.

Barksdale will come to UNC Asheville from Baltimore City College High School in Baltimore. She helped lead her team to the 3-A Maryland state championship this past spring. Barksdale was an All-Metro first team selection as she averaged nine points and five assists per game. In the state championship game against an unbeaten River Hill squad, she scored 21 points and had three assists to lead her school to its first ever state championship in any sport with a 59-51 overtime victory.

“We are very pleased to announce that Breaira Barksdale will join us next year,” stated Blose. “We wanted to sign a point guard and believe we have landed a very good one in “Bre.” She is an athletic and skilled basketball player who exhibits leadership both on and off the court. Last year, she led her school to its first ever state championship. We know that she will bring a winning mindset to UNC Asheville.”

The state of Maryland has produced some great guards for the Bulldog program the past few years in Kristal Hood, Ana Baker and Kendall Shepard.

Barksdale is the third signee for the UNC Asheville program. She will join 5-7 guard Grace Blaylock and 5-10 forward Candice Fritz as freshmen in the Bulldog program this fall.
