RADFORD, Va. - Taleia Moton led Radford with 27 points as the
Highlanders escaped with a 53-48 win over UNC Asheville on Monday night
in the Dedmon Center.
Kendall Shepard hit a jumper to make the score 49-48 in the Highlanders' favor with 18 seconds left in the second half. Linda Aughburns immediately fouled Alston, who proceeded to hit her two foul shots to give Radford a three point lead (51-48). The Bulldogs had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer, but Ana Baker was tied-up by a Radford defender at the top of the key and possession was given to the Highlanders. Johnette Walker hit two foul shots and Radford escaped for with a 53-48 victory.
Both teams had a difficult time putting the ball in the basket in the first half. The Bulldogs shot 36-percent (10-of-28) in the half, while the Highlanders were at 26-percent (9-of-34). With Asheville leading 22-21 with two seconds remaining in the half, Ana Baker picked up her third foul as she bumped into Taleia Moton. Moton knocked down her two free throws to give the Highlanders a 23-22 lead at halftime.
Moton scored 16 of Radford's 23 first half points. Jessica Monroe led the Bulldogs with 9 points in the opening 20 minutes. Monroe finished the game as Asheville's leading scorer with 13 points.
The Bulldogs fall to 10-18 overall and 7-8 in the Big South with the loss. Radford moves to 10-16 and 9-6 with the victory.
Both teams close their regular seasons on Friday, March 6. UNC Asheville hits the road for a 7 p.m contest against Winthrop, while Radford hosts first place Liberty at 7 p.m.
