Baseball Wins First Game 7-4

ASHEVILLE,N.C. - Taylor Wohlwend pitched six scoreless innings and Justin Schumer earned his first save of the year as UNC Asheville held off Central Michigan 7-4 in the first game of a double-header at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.

Wohlwend struck out eight and raised his record to 1-2 on the season. Central Michigan loaded the bases in the fourth inning with nobody out but Wohlwend struck out the next three hitters to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

Asheville (2-5) got big hits throughout the day as the Bulldogs scored five runs with two-out hits. Catlin Carter delivered a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the eighth that scored two runs to give the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead.

CMU (2-4) trailed 5-0 but scored four runs in the top of the eighth to cut the Asheville lead to 5-4. Schumer got the Bulldogs out of the threat by recording a strikeout. He got the visitors out in the top of the ninth to earn his 11th career save.

Asheville scored single runs in each of the first two innings. The Bulldogs took advantage of two Chippewas errors in the first inning. Kevin Weidenbacher reached on an infield single and then advanced to second on a throwing error on the same play. Justin Schumer then reached on a throwing error allowing Weidenbacher to score.

In the second inning, Austin Graham and Danny Baatz had back to back singles to place runners at first and third with one out. Jonny Eaker laid down a successful safety squeeze to score Graham.

In the sixth, Justin Schumer reached on a one out walk. Beau Zinman hit into what looked like a double play, put the throw to second was wild and both runners moved up to second and third. Baatz who went 3-for-4 delivered a single that plated both runners to make the score 5-0.

Central Michigan rallied in the eighth. Lead off walks to Rhett Goodmiller and Matt Faiman began the rally. RBI-singles by Nate Thunnissen who was 3-for-5 and Sam Russell made it 5-2. William Arnold followed with a two RBI-double to make it a one run game.

Asheville added two insurance runs in the eighth. A walk and an error had Bulldogs at second and third with two outs. Carter then delivered hit second hit of the game to score both runners.

Dan Taylor (1-1) took the loss for Central Michigan.
