Asheville looks to bounce back after a frustrating 66-53 defeat to Newberry on Saturday afternoon in the Bulldogs first game of the year. One glance at the stat sheet told Saturday's story as Asheville host just 31 percent from the field (18-of-58) and an anemic five percent (1-of-20) from the three-point line.
"We played hard but just couldn't score," admitted Bulldog coach Betsy Blose. "I thought our struggles on offense carried over to our defense. We want our defense to help get us some points but that didn't happen."
There were some bright spots as junior forward Lindsey Montgomery had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Chioma Okoli added 13 points. Kiana Rainey tallied a career-best 10 points and collected eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs turn their attention to a South Carolina State squad that edged Asheville last season at Justice Center, 67-64. SCSU struggled to a 6-22 season last year but opened this year with a 60-50 triumph over Savannah State on Saturday.
"South Carolina State is much improved this year, and they beat us last season," commented Blose. "We're going to have to play better than we did on Saturday to have a shot at winning."
The Bulldogs return home on Saturday to face Lees-McRae starting at 2 p.m.
