LEXINGTON, VA. - UNC Asheville scored twice in the second half to rally past VMI, 2-1 in Big South Conference men's soccer action at Patchin Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-6-1, 2-1-1) won their second straight road game with the victory and also won at VMI for the first time since the 2003 season.
Asheville trailed 1-0 in the first half as the Keydets got a goal from Brian Harding at the 19:54 mark. VMI controlled part of the opening half as it had a 11-7 edge in shots.
The Bulldogs stormed back in the second half. Freshman Scott Himelein scored his first career goal on a header off a pass from Branden Lassen at the 50:02 mark to knot the match at 1-1.
Asheville continued to battle back and finally took the lead when freshman Zachary Odum scored his third goal of the year off a deflection in front of the net to push the Bulldogs in front, 2-1. The goal came at the 78:21 mark.
Asheville goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen was brilliant yet again for the visitors. He had nine saves in the match, four in the opening half and five in the second period. He made three of those saves in the final 10 minutes of the match, including a shot by VMI's Sonny Landry with 10 seconds to go.
"This is a great road victory for our lads," commented Bulldog coach Steve Cornish. "VMI has been playing some very good soccer recently and it is never easy to win up here. We did a great job rallying in the second half to get a result."
The Bulldogs play again next Saturday night at Winthrop starting at 7 p.m.
