Men's Soccer Edged in Overtime, 1-0

09.13.2008 | Men's Soccer

ELON, N.C. ? UNC Asheville battled Southern Conference foe Elon for more than 90 minutes but the Phoenix got a goal from Justin Wyatt in the 95th minute to give the home team a 1-0 overtime victory over the Bulldogs Friday night.

The Bulldogs (0-2-0) competed and fought hard as they were out-shot 17-9 but strong defense and great goalkeeping from freshman Lassi Hurskainen kept the match scoreless. Hurskainen made five saves for Asheville.

The Bulldogs got two shots from each from four different players. They were Bryan George, Patrick Tate, Ryan Haupt and Jake Hagedorn.

The loss was the second straight 1-0 defeat suffered by Asheville in the young season.

“This was another tough loss,” commented Bulldog head coach Steve Cornish. “We played a tough team on the road right to the end but just couldn't score . Our lads will keep competing and hopefully these close results will turn our way soon.”

UNC Asheville plays UNC Greensboro on Sunday at Elon starting at 1 p.m.
