Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Maine

DURHAM, N.C.? UNC Asheville rallied to win the fourth set but came up two points short dropping the fifth set in a 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 18-16 loss to Maine on the final day of the Hilton/RTP NCCU Volleyball Tournament.
The loss ends the tournament for the Bulldogs who went 1-2 in pool play falling 3-0 to Elon and defeating Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 yesterday. Seven of the 13 sets Asheville played in the tournament were decided by three points or less.
Lauren Ficker had 10 kills to lead the Bulldogs and Kelsey Benroden added 11 kills and 17 digs for her second straight double-double. Brooke Holliday had 15 digs for Asheville.
"It was a battle to the end," said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "Maine is a very tall team but we were right there with them. A point here or there and this could have been a different result. We are playing at a higher level than we were at this time last year. We played two long matches this weekend and with the more volleyball we play, the better we will be."
UNC Asheville will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. next weekend for a tournament at USC Upstate. The Bulldogs will open with Hampton on Friday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m.
