Bulldogs Claim First Victory in Five Sets Against FCGU

DURHAM, N.C.? UNC Asheville came back from a 2-1 deficit to recorded its first victory of the season 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, and 15-8 over Florida Gulf Coast in its second match of the Hilton/RTP NCCU Volleyball Tournament.
The Bulldogs (1-1) used a big block to win sets four and five. Heather Burns recorded six blocks and Lauren Ficker added four blocks in the match. Ficker paced the Bulldogs offensively for the second-straight match.
"Our slide was very effective tonight," said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "Lauren (Ficker) hit the ball as well as I have ever seen her hit. She had a terrific day."
Kelsey Benorden come back after a disappointing performance against Elon to record her first double-double of the season. Raquel Miotto was solid defensively leading all players in digs.
After the two teams split the first two sets. FGCU (0-2) overcame an 18-13 deficit to finish the set on a 13-5 run. Asheville responded and win the fourth set and force a final set. The Bulldogs jumped up early in the decisive set.
"I was proud of the way we rebounded not only from the Elon match but also within this match. We stayed focused on the present and I think we will gain confidence from this match seeing that we can come back against a very good team."
Asheville will complete round robin play on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Maine. A win will put the Bulldogs in the playoff round on Saturday afternoon.
