UNC Asheville Volleyball Hosts Blue-White Scrimmage on Tuesday Night

08.25.2008 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville volleyball team will play its annual Blue-White scrimmage Tuesday night at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The Bulldogs have been working hard since the beginning of August as they prepare for the 2008 season. Julie Torbett's club opens the year this weekend at the North Carolina Central Invitational with matches against Elon, Florida Gulf Coast and Maine.

“We're looking forward to having our Blue-White scrimmage and to play in front of our fans,” stated Torbett. “It will be fun to play a match after we've been practicing for the past few weeks.”

UNC Asheville struggled for part of the 2007 season as it finished with a 12-22 overall record. However, the Bulldogs played well down the stretch winning six of their final nine matches and advancing to the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament for the sixth straight year.

Asheville returns most of last year's club as five starters are back. Senior Heather Burns is the lone senior on this year's club. She'll be joined by talented juniors' Lauren Ficker, Brooke and Bridget Holliday, Kaitlyn McDaniel and Raquel Miotto. Miotto is one of the best liberos in the Big South Conference.

Sophomore Kelsey Benorden was a bright spot in 2007 as she set a UNC Asheville record for kills by a freshman with 500. Benorden earned a spot on the Big South All-Rookie team and made the league's all-tournament squad. Sophomores' Jenna Dover and Rachel Guinane should make contributions to this year's club.

The Bulldogs have four freshmen competing for playing time this season. They include Cindi Miller, Rachel Olivio, Regan Simpson and Lia Scott.

“We've worked hard in practice and made some strides since we started a few weeks ago,” declared Torbett. “There's still work to do but we have a lot of talent and anxious to get the season started.”

Asheville's first home match won't be until Sept. 23 when the Bulldogs entertain North Carolina A&T at Justice Center.

The Justice Center will be the site of this year's Big South Conference Tournament from Nov. 20-23. Ticket information about the tournament will be coming out soon. For more information on UNC Asheville volleyball or all Bulldog sports, go to www.uncabulldogs.com.
