ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville scored three times in the first half and that was enough to down East Tennessee State, 3-1 in an exhibition match before a packed crowd at Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

The Bulldogs dominated the first half with their three goals before the Buccaneers had the better amount of play in the second half.

“We played quite well in the first half and the only thing that was disappointing is that we should have scored a few more times as we let some chances go,” commented Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “In the second half, East Tennessee State did a good job of making some adjustments and gave us fits. We were able to hold on in the end.

“Overall, I was pleased to get the result,” added Cornish. “You always want to improve from one match to the next and I thought we did that this evening.”

The Bulldogs gave the capacity crowd something to cheer about right off the bat when Caleb Alexander scored unassisted at the 2:02 mark. He stole an errant Buccaneer pass in the back and struck from five yards out for an early 1-0 Asheville lead.

The home team pushed the lead to 2-0 when Nathan Neal sent a perfect pass to freshman Jake Hagedorn who flicked the ball into the back of the net at the 29:45 mark.

Asheville scored its final goal off a free kick at 39:12. Senior defender Edwin Wotortsi had the free kick and sent the ball into the goal area when freshman Branden Lassen tipped the ball into goal for a 3-0 Bulldog advantage.

Asheville held a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half.

The Buccaneers came to life in the second half and had the control of play. They got on the board when freshman Aliyu Surgi entered the game. He hit a free ball from 10 yards out to score unassisted and cut the lead to 3-1.

Surgi created two more chances that almost put the visitors on the board. He was stopped on a breakaway by Wotortsi, who knocked the ball away at the last minute. Surgi had another shot slapped away by a Bulldog defender. The Bucs had a goal taken away by an off-sides call with three minutes remaining.

UNC Asheville is off until Saturday, Sept. 6 when the Bulldogs open the 2008 season against Appalachian State at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m.
