ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Senior midfielder Patrick Tate scored twice to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-0 victory over King College in exhibition soccer action at Greenwood Field Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs got a goal and two assists from senior Nathan Neal and solid goalkeeping from freshman Lassi Hurskainen to record the victory. Hurskainen made two saves, including one early in the game to keep the match scoreless.

“I really liked what I saw out on the field today,” commented UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “This is a good result against a King College team that will win a lot of matches this season.

“We did a nice job finishing and going forward throughout the match,” added Cornish. “Our lads still have plenty of work to do before the season starts but today is a nice start.”

King had a chance early to take the lead as Erik Douglas blasted a shot from five yards out but Hurskainen made a spectacular save to keep the Tornados off the board.

The Bulldogs got on the board at the 17:01 mark when Neal sent a pass to Tate inside the box. Tate was able to head the ball into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 Asheville lead.

The goal seemed to energize the home team as the Bulldogs dominated play for the rest of the half. Neal picked up a goal at the 44:34 mark when he struck a shot from 20 yards for a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs scored their final goal early in the second half off a corner kick. Neal sent a ball into the box that Tate blasted into the left side of the game for a 3-0 Asheville lead.

“We scored some nice goals today,” explained Cornish. “I thought Lassi was quite good in goal for this being his first match.”

UNC Asheville plays its second and final exhibition match Saturday night against East Tennessee State starting at 7 p.m. The match will be played at Memorial Stadium in downtown Asheville behind McCormick Field.
