Nicholas Thuell Named Alternate to Bermuda Davis Cup Team

07.10.2008 | Men's Tennis

Recently graduated UNC Asheville tennis player Nicholas Thuell has been selected by the Bermuda Lawn and Tennis Association as an alternate to the 2008 Bermuda Davis Cup Team.

The Bermuda team will have four players playing in zone Davis Cup competition that starts this weekend at Honduras. If one of the four players cannot play, Thuell will play for Bermuda in either singles or doubles.

Thuell was asked to try out by the Bermuda Lawn and Tennis Association after he graduated in May. He spent a week in May trying out for the team and found out in late June that he had earned the first alternate spot on the Bermuda squad. Thuell was born in Bermuda and still has many relatives living there.

The Davis Cup is the international tennis tournament, where countries are grouped together both by geographical region, and tennis standards. The United States is the defending Davis Cup champion.

Bermuda is in the Americas Zone, Group 4 and will play against U.S. Virgin Islands, Honduras, and Costa Rica in a round-robin format. The team with the best record among the four will move up to Group 3 next year.

Thuell was a four-year letterman for the UNC Asheville tennis program. He played both singles and doubles for the Bulldogs and was a member of the Big South All-Academic team for men's tennis his junior and senior year. Thuell graduated in May with a degree in Economics.
