UNC Asheville Announces Athletic Department Awards

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville Athletics Department announced its award winners for the 2007-08 academic year at a reception on campus Wednesday afternoon.

Senior women's basketball player Ashton Barton was tapped as the 2007-08 UNC Asheville Female Athlete of the Year. The Rosman native finished her career as the school's ninth all-time leader in scoring with 1,137 points. This past season she led the Bulldogs in three different offensive categories and was named as a second team Big South All-Conference performer.

Senior men's basketball player Bryan Smithson was named as the 2007-08 UNC Asheville Male Athlete of the Year. The Kennesaw, Ga. native led the Bulldogs in four different offensive categories during the season. He was named as a first team Big South All-Conference performer and also made the league's all-tournament team. Smithson was also named MVP of the Big South Conference by CollegeInsider.com and was a second team all-state selection by North Carolina's Sports Information Directors.

Senior cross country and track and field standout Ingrid Allstaedt was named as the 2007-08 UNC Asheville Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Brevard native participated in three sports this year as she was on the cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field teams. She was recently named to the Big South All-Academic team for Outdoor Track and Field. Allstaedt is majoring in Mass Communications and has a GPA of 3.763.

Senior men's soccer player David Verga earned the 2007-08 UNC Asheville Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Winston-Salem native been named to the Big South Men's Soccer All-Academic team for three straight years, a first for any Bulldog soccer player. He is majoring in Literature and has a GPA of 3.755.
