ASHEVILLE, N.C.?The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at Winthrop in a 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Asheville area on AM-970/1310 WISE and can be seen at bigsouthsports.com for a small fee.
Ashton Barton and Stacy Shepard each played their final regular season home game on Saturday. The duo combined for 25 of the teams 46 points. Barton is currently 9th on Asheville's all-time scoring list and Shepard is fourth all-time in rebounding. Shepard leads the Big South and is the division I single-season rebounding leader at Asheville. Shepard is attempting to become the first Bulldog player to average double figure boards in the division I era. The two seniors have a four year record of 65-54 making them the second winningest class at Asheville in the division I era.
Barton leads the team and is fourth in the Big South in scoring at 13.3 points per game while Shepard leads the conference in rebounding at 10.2 boards per game.
The Lady Eagles are enjoying their finest season as a division I school with a school record 19 wins. Ashley Fann, who is third in the Big South in scoring, leads the team averaging 13.8 points per game. Tiffany Rodd is averaging 11.7 points per game. She is averaging 2.4 made three-pointers per game. Winthrop is second in the Big South in field goal percentage, FG percentage defense, and assists.
Winthrop and UNC Asheville have split 52 previous games 26-26. Winthrop won the first game this season 75-54 at the Justice Center on Feb. 6. The last time the Lady Egles swept the season series was in 2002-03 which was also the last time the two teams ended the regular season against each other.
UNC Asheville and the City of Asheville will host the Advance Auto Parts Big South Tournament on March 14-16, at the Justice Center.
