Bulldog Women Finish Road Trip at High Point on Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?UNC Asheville women's team will wrap up a three-game road trip with a 7 p.m. game at High Point on Wednesday night. The game can be seen live via the internet for a small fee.

 

The Bulldogs (10-14, 1-6 Big South) are trying to end a five-game losing streak with four of the losses coming on the road. Over the last five games, Asheville is averaging 53.0 points per game and is shooting 29.2 percent from the floor.

 

Ashton Barton is fourth in the Big South in scoring and is leading the team at 13.2 points per game. Stacy Shepard continues to lead the Big South in the rebounding at 10 rebounds per game. She is four rebounds shy of moving into fourth place on Asheville's all-time rebounding list. In conference play, Shepard is averaging 8.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game and is shooting 71 percent from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Mackenzie Maier leads three Panthers (12-12, 4-4 Big South) who are averaging double figure points at 10.9 points per game. She has won three of the last four Big South Freshmen of the Week honors. In Big South play, Maier is averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Fellow freshmen Jurica Hargraves and LaTeisha Dean are averaging 10.5 and 10.3 points respectively. Five of the Panthers top six scorers are freshmen and the Panthers have won seven of the 14 freshmen of the week awards this season.

 

High Point leads the overall series 19-8 over Asheville after winning 81-70 at the Justice Center on Jan. 19. The two teams have split the season series each of the last two seasons. The last time HPU swept Asheville was during the 2004-05 season when HPU won both regular season meetings before Asheville won in the conference tournament.
