CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville's Lindsey Montgomery has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Shamia Brown from High Point was tabbed New Balance Freshman of the Week, the League announced today.
Montgomery, a sophomore from Shelby, N.C., averaged 15.0 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game to lead her Bulldogs to a 1-1 record on the week. She got her week started with 13 points on 44-percent from the floor and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe in Asheville's win over mountain rival Western Carolina on Dec. 12. She also came away with five rebounds and one blocked shot in the win over the Catamounts. On Dec. 6 against Charlotte, Montgomery poured in 17 points as she connected on 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. In the post, the forward ripped down nine boards and came away with two blocks and four steals. The honor marks her first Player of the Week nod of the season.
Brown, a forward from Raeford, N.C., averaged 13.0 points and 4.7 rebounds in three games for the Panthers last week. She got her week started with 10 points and four rebounds in HPU's win over George Mason on Dec. 1. Two days later, Brown exploded for 20 points as she hit 54-percent of her shots from the floor and connected on 6-of-9 from the line to go along with nine rebounds against Georgia Southern. She finished her week with nine points, one rebound and one steal against South Carolina on Dec. 5. The honor is her second Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
UNC Asheville will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Johnson C. Smith in a 2 p.m. game at the Justice Center.
