Men's Soccer Stuns Gardner-Webb 4-2

CONWAY, S.C. ? UNC Asheville got goals from four different players as the Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Conference men's soccer tournament with a hard-fought 4-2 upset win over third-seeded Gardner-Webb Thursday evening.
UNC Asheville (7-7-4) advances to the semifinals for the first time since the 2004 season. They'll play second-seeded Coastal Carolina on Friday night at 7 p.m.
“We're very glad to get the win and advance to the semifinals,” commented UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “We scored four wonderful goals and did a nice job going forward.
“However, we didn't play great on defense and had way too many turnovers,” added Cornish. “I never felt comfortable until the match ended.”
Gardner-Webb out-shot Asheville 22-11. Bulldog goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen made eight saves.
Asheville opened the scoring when freshman Bryan Bartels scored his first goal of the season at 22:51. He hit the shot from five yards and got assists from Scott Szymanski and J.W. Gallagher to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
It stayed 1-0 until midway through the second half when Asheville scored twice within 10 minutes. Ryan Haupt scored his fourth goal of the season when he scored from 12 yards out at 60:02. Ten minutes later, Alex Morrow connected on a shot from 30 yards to push the lead to 3-0.
GWU battled back and got a goal from Bradley Morrison to cut the lead to 3-1 at 74:50.
Freshman midfielder Colton Paschall picked a great time to score his first career goal as he tallied a goal at 83:56 to increase the lead to 4-1.
Morrison scored his second goal of the game one minute later to narrow the lead to 4-2.
