Cross Country Travels to Louisville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams travel to Louisville, Ky. for Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic (GLC) hosted by the Greater Louisville Sports Commission.

A total of 65 collegiate teams from 15 states are entered in the event.  Powerhouse programs Louisville, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt highlight the field.  Asheville and Winthrop are the two Big South institutions in the competition.

Two weeks ago, the Asheville men's and women's teams both finished in sixth place at the Liberty Big South Preview in Lynchburg, Va.

Top performer Adam Matthews missed the Big South Preview due to an injury, but will compete in Saturday's 8-kilometer men's race.

“Adam is good to go,” said head coach Jesse Norman.  “He's a little rusty right now, but he should be alright.”

Norman has been pushing the women's team particularly hard after subpar results in the season's previous races.

“I've tinkered with the women's training a little bit,” said Norman.  “I've made it a little more intense and harder.  They're a little beat up and trying to adjust to the training, but they should be prepared for Saturday's race.”

On a side note, the Bulldogs will travel to Louisville on the same bus as Western Carolina in response to the recent gasoline shortage that has occurred in western North Carolina.

The racing action on Saturday will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the men's gold race.  The Bulldog women's team will compete in the women's blue 5K at 11:45 a.m.

Full GLC results will be posted on www.uncabulldogs.com following the conclusion of the women's race.
