ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville baseball coach Willie Stewart is pleased to announce that legendary former high school coach Tommy Smith will join the Bulldog program this year as a volunteer assistant coach.
Smith coached at nearby T.C. Roberson for 28 years and compiled a record of 478-187, winning three 3-A state titles (1983, 2000, 2002) and taking home 14 conference championships. He coached pitcher Darren Holmes who had a long major league career and outfielder Cameron Maybin, who just got called up by the Detroit Tigers last month.
“I am thrilled to have a coach the caliber of Tommy Smith join our program,” stated Stewart. “Tommy Smith was one of the finest high school coaches in the nation and his experience will be invaluable to our program this year.
“As a young coach, I can't help but become a better coach with someone like Tommy on our staff,” added Stewart. “He will be in asset to us in every phase of our program.”
