Bulldogs Win Fifth Straight Match to Claim Tournament Title

Ficker Sets Career High; Bulldogs Fall to Dolphins

09.23.2007 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C.-- Lauren Ficker recorded a career-high 21 kills and Kelsey Benorden added 19 kills and 18 digs but UNC Asheville could not overcome a balanced Jacksonville attack as the Dolphins won 28-30, 30-24, 30-27, 30-20 in volleyball action at the Justice Center Sunday afternoon.

Ficker, who set her career high with 19 kills on Wednesday in a five game match at East Tennessee State, took 50 swings against Jacksonville. She led the Dogs in game one with seven kills leading Asheville (6-11) to the victory in the opening game.

Jacksonville (7-9) placed four players in double figures in kills led by Sara Bendorf who had 19 kills and 21 digs. Brittany Lehman had 16 kills, 10 digs, and Melissa Merchant and Abby Gruenbacher had 12 and 11 kills respectively.

After winning game two, JU never trailed in the final two games. In game three, JU jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held its largest lead at 19-15. Asheville tied the game at 22 and 24 before the Dolphins won six of the next nine points to take the game and a 2-1 lead in the match.

JU scored the first seven points of game four and was never really threatened as the Dolphins finished their road trip with a 2-1 record. JU out hit Asheville .253 to .175 in the match and out-blocked the Bulldogs 10-5.

Asheville played its third straight match without Alysha Greer who is expected to be available when the Bulldogs open Big South Conference play on Friday at Coastal Carolina.
