TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The first weekend of the volleyball season was a tough one for UNC Asheville as it dropped its final match of the FSU Invitational 30-9, 30-21, 30-12 to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (0-3) struggled in serve receive committing 13 serve receive errors and hitting just .026 in the match. Florida Gulf Coast (1-1) hit .311 in the match.

Patricia Silva led all hitters with 12 kills for FGCU. The Eagles had four player record double figure kill matches led by Brooke Youngquist's 19. FGCU out-dug the Bulldogs 72-35 in the match.

Lauren Ficker and Alysha Greer paced the Asheville attack with five kills each while Shannen Bagge had a team high 11 digs.

"We knew coming into the weekend that the three teams we would play we are all talented teams and that we would have to play very well to win," said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "Unfortunately, we did not pass as well as we are capable of and that made it difficult on our young hitters. This weekend was a learning experience that we will build on."

Asheville played both of its Saturday matches without Heather Burns and Raquel Miotto who were injured in Friday's match against TCU.

The Bulldogs will open the home portion of their schedule next weekend as they host Western Carolina, Kennesaw State, and USC Upstate in the UNC Asheville Classic at the Justice Center. The first game of the tournament will be Kennesaw State and USC Upstate on Friday at 4 p.m. with UNC Asheville and Western Carolina squaring off at 7 p.m.
