ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville scored four goals in the first half en route to a 4-0 exhibition men's soccer win over King College at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Patrick Tate led the Bulldog offense with two goals, while J.W. Gallagher and John Hillman also scored. Gallagher posted an assist on Tate's first goal.
Asheville scored on four of its five shots in the opening half before the Tornados took charge in the second half. King out-shot the Bulldogs, 10-1 in the second half after not registering a shot in the opening half.
"We're quite pleased to get a result over a fine King College squad," stated UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "In the first half, we played very well going forward and made the most of our shots.
"However, we need to remember that King had played a match yesterday (a 1-1 tie with Tusculum) and I'm sure that hurt them in the first half," added Cornish. "In the second half, they were a handful, and we were fortunate to keep them off the scoreboard."
Senior goalkeeper Michael Pereira made four saves to earn the shutout.
"Overall, I was pleased with our lads today," said Cornish. "We didn't have a lot of depth and everyone had to play a lot of minutes. I thought we were quite composed for the most part."
Gallagher sent a perfect pass to Tate right in the box and the junior midfielder fired it home at the 9:12 mark to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Asheville made it 2-0 seven minutes later when Scott Syzmanski fed Gallagher, who scored on an eight-yard blast to pad the lead to 2-0.
Tate scored on a header off a pass from Alex Morrow to increase the lead to 3-0 in the 25th minute.
The Bulldogs finished the scoring in the 30th minute when John Hillman connected on a shot from 10 yards away. Caleb Alexander earned an assist on the play.
King finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots and 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Tornado goalkeeper Warren Beck made one save.
UNC Asheville plays UNC Chapel Hill Saturday night in Morganton at 7 p.m.
