06.20.2007 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville outfielder Rob Vernon was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region Second-Team on Wednesday as announced by the ABCA.
Vernon set UNC Asheville single-season records for highest batting average (.394), most hits (97), longest hitting streak (21 games), and most total bases (153) in 2007. Vernon earned All-Big South First-Team honors and was one of three Big South players to make the All-Region team. Coastal Carolina outfielder Tommy Baldridge was a first-team selection and Coastal pitcher Bobby Gagg joins Vernon on the second team.
"It is quite an honor to make the all-region team because of the quality of baseball in this region," said Asheville head coach Willie Stewart. "There were five teams from our state in the NCAA tournament this season. Rob deserves the recognition because he had one of the better seasons in school history. He was a great leader for us both on the field and in the classroom and I couldn't be happier for him."
Vernon's senior year saw him lead the Bulldogs in average, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage, on base percentage, and stolen bases. The full list of ABCA All-Atlantic Region members follows.
