ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet Cone announced on Thursday that women's basketball coach Betsy Blose has agreed to a four-year contract extension. The contract extension calls for a 10 percent pay increase and will run through July 2011.
"We are very excited about this new contract for Betsy," said Cone. "Betsy has accomplished so much during her time here and has done it in a first-class way. We want her to be our coach for a long time."
"I am very pleased with this new contract," Blose said. "I appreciate the support that Chancellor Ponder, Janet Cone and the administration has given me throughout this process.
"I love UNC Asheville and the community," added Blose. "We believe our program has accomplished a great deal during the past five years but we're not through yet."
Blose came to UNC Asheville in the spring of 2002 and inherited a program that had just one winning season in the previous 16 years. The Bulldogs are 76-71 under Blose and have gone 73-46 during the last four seasons. Blose led the school to its first ever women's basketball Big South Conference championship this past March and took the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
She is the school's all-time winningest coach with 76 wins. Blose was named the 2004 Big South Conference Coach of the Year when she directed the Bulldogs to a 19-9 overall record. Asheville was the most improved team in the nation that year. The next season the Bulldogs finished with an 18-12 mark and advanced to the Big South Conference championship game for just the second time in school history.
