12.11.2007 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?UNC Asheville senior outfielder Kevin Mattison joins seven other Big South Players that have been named to the preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watch List by the College Baseball Foundation, the organization announced recently.  The Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual induction festivities.  The 2008 award banquet will be held Thursday, July 3, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.

Mattison led the Big South in triples last season with eight which tied the Big South Conference record as well as the UNC Asheville record for triples in a season. He is also UNC Asheville's career leader in triples with 19 career three baggers and ranked 8th in the NCAA in triples per game last season.

The Kernersville, N.C., native also blasted six home runs last season with three of them leading off games. He has 16 career home runs and 15 career outfield assists.

This summer, Mattison played for the Edenton (N.C.) Steamers of the Coastal Plains League where he led CPL  in stolen bases going 30-for-33 and led his team in home runs with 11.

He is joined on the watch list by Coastal Carolina's Tommy Baldridge and Bobby Gagg, Liberty's Garrett Young, Radford's Alex Gregory and Nate Toth and VMI hurlers Michael Bowman and Kevin Crum.

The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District his senior year. He led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in 1980. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984, he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27. The Plano, TX, native was married to the former Sandy Arnold and they had one daughter, Lindsay Ryan.
