Busha Kicks Bulldogs Past CSU in Quarterfinals

In the deciding shootout, Charleston Southern's Caitlin Gunyan and UNC Asheville's Juliana Duncan were successful on the first attempt, while Lady Buc Sarah Catenacci and Lady Bulldog Shoshana Fried also connected. Lazar made an outstanding save to stop Marky Boyce's shot to the lower-left corner from reaching the net. UNC Asheville's Emily Elstrom hit her target to take the lead 3-2. In CSU's fourth attempt Caitlin Wesnesky missed the net by inches to give UNCA the two goal advantage. Robyn Busha ensured the victory by blasting her shot past CSU keeper, Jena Uvalle.
During the first half of regulation several attempts toward the net were made by both UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern at the start of the game, when Busha made the first shot attempt in the fourth minute, and then accumulated two more shots within the first 20 minutes of the half, all of which were blocked by the CSU defense.
At 14:10, Charleston Southern's, Boyce juggled the ball towards the net and then fired a shot that missed just wide of the left goal post. Two minutes later Sarah Catenacci, drilled a shot the slipped through the hands of the Bulldog's goalkeeper, Lazar but still missed the net, banging off the left goal post.
Freshman, Katy Beeler opened up the scoring at 35:23, when she fired a shot from the left side of the field into the right corner of the net off a pass from McKenna Stockhausen to take the first lead of the night, 1-0.
Three minutes later the Charleston Southern freshman duo Michelle Dennis and Boyce answered back when Dennis dribbled the ball past two UNCA defenders to find teammate Boyce, who beat another defender and drilled a shot into the net past UNC Asheville keeper Lazar to knot the game, 1-1.
After the first half each team remained relatively equal with Charleston Southern attempting nine shots and UNC Asheville posting seven shots, and UNCA with two corners and CSU with one.
Early in the second-half, sophomore Jen Vroman, headed the ball straight for the Bulldog's net, but missed just inches as it blasted off the left-side goal post.
In a hard fought second-half, UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern continued to trade shots back and forth to no avail, forcing the game to go into overtime. After regulation The Lady Bucs recorded 23 shots to UNCA's 15, while Lazar posted eight saves and CSU goalkeeper, Uvalle tallied three saves.
After two periods of scoreless overtime, UNC Asheville topped the Lady Bucs, 4-2 in a penalty shootout, after going 1-1 in regulation. Charleston Southern ends its season with a 12-7-0 record, while UNC Asheville improves its record to 4-13-0. Last years tournament champion will face No. 3 High Point tomorrow at 7:30pm, seeing its sixth straight trip to the Semifinals.
