ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville volleyball team is home this weekend for two Big South Conference matches and looking to build on the momentum of an impressive non-conference victory earlier this week.
The Bulldogs host Charleston Southern Friday night at Justice Center starting at 6 p.m. The match is a part of Jammin at the Justice Center with the men's and women's basketball team. The basketball teams will be introduced following the volleyball match.
Fans can see the volleyball match and the basketball for three dollars on a donated canned food item for Manna Food Bank.
On Saturday, UNC Asheville hosts Coastal Carolina at Justice Center starting at 2 p.m. The match will be televised tape delay by AETV starting Saturday night at 9 p.m. It will run throughout the week at 9 p.m. Both matches can be seen live via video-streaming for a small fee at www.uncabulldogs.com or www.bigsouthsports.com.
The Bulldogs (7-19) snapped an 11-game losing Tuesday night in impressive fashion when they roared past Gardner-Webb, 30-26, 30-22, 20-23 on the road. Asheville coach Julie Torbett hopes the Bulldogs can use that win as a springboard for success in the last half of the season.
"This was a much needed victory for our team," said Torbett. "We have been playing better volleyball the last couple of matches and to get a win on the road is a real boost to our confidence heading into this weekend."
Asheville hopes to avenge earlier defeats to Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina this weekend.
“We hope to play better than we did at both places this weekend, and we should be able to do that at home,” commented Torbett. “Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina are two good teams though and we'll have to be at our best to have a chance at winning.”
Freshman Kelsey Benorden leads Asheville in kills with a 3.93 per game average. Sophomore Lauren Ficker tops the club in blocks (.92) and hitting percentage (.255). Sophomore Raquel Miotto is leading in digs at 4.96.
