Women's Basketball Opens Practice for 2007-08 Season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The defending Big South Conference champion UNC Asheville women's basketball team will begin preparations for the 2007-08 season this weekend.

The Bulldogs finished with a 21-12 overall record last year en route to their first ever Big South Conference championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Asheville coach Betsy Blose is looking forward to defending that championship.

“Defending a championship is a new role for this program,” commented Blose. “We know it's going to be a challenge but we're looking forward to that challenge.”

UNC Asheville graduated five seniors and three starters from last year's championship club. The Bulldogs will be young this season as seven of their 11 players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores.

“We're very talented but extremely young and inexperienced,” declared Blose. “I'm excited about our young players but they have a lot to learn.”

Blose also needs her team to stay healthy.

“One of the big keys this year is we have to stay healthy,” added Blose. “We have 11 players so staying away from injuries is going to be so important.”

Asheville returns guards' Ashton Barton and Ana Baker. Barton was the Bulldogs leading scorer last season with a 12.9 average before missing the final six games of the year with an injury. Baker quarterbacked UNC Asheville into the NCAA Tournament from her point guard position. She led the Bulldogs in assists (106) and steals (81). Also returning is center Stacy Shepard. The senior post player averaged 6.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season.

UNC Asheville plays its first exhibition game against Mars Hill on Nov. 1 at Justice Center starting at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs open the 2007-08 season at home against Montreat on Nov. 12.
