CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville senior leftfielder Rob Vernon (Solon, Ohio) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while VMI sophomore Chris Henderson (Fredericksburg, Va.) has been named New Balance Pitcher of the Week for games played April 2-8, it was announced today by the League office.

Vernon batted .600 in four games last week (12-20) and extended his hitting streak to 18 games, tied for the longest in the Big South this season as well as the school's record. He posted three multi-hit games last week as he had a hit in 11 of his first 15 at-bats. Vernon went 3-4 vs. Appalachian State, 4-6 in game one vs. Charleston Southern and 4-5 in the second game against the Bucs. He finished the week with six runs scored, six RBI, two doubles, two triples, two stolen bases, a .900 slugging percentage and .619 on-base average.

Vernon will attempt to break current Bulldog head coach Willie Stewart's record hit streak on Tuesday night as UNC Asheville hosts Western Carolina at McCormick Field at 7 p.m. Stewart hit in 18-straight games during the 2000 season. Former Bulldog Tony Campana hit in 18-straight games during the 2005 season. Vernon is 37-for-79 (.468) during his streak.

The Bulldogs defeated WCU in their first meeting in Cullowhee on March 14, 7-6. WCU has won six games in a row heading into Tuesday's contest which can be heard live on the internet at uncabulldogs.com
