LEXINGTON, Va. - Hilary McKay scored just 40 seconds into overtime to give UNC Asheville its sixth-straight victory 3-2 over VMI Saturday afternoon in Big South women's soccer action.
The victory moves the Bulldogs to 10-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Big South. Asheville needs a win or a tie in its final Big South match at High Point on Wednesday to claim its second consecutive Big South regular-season title.
McKay's goal was her second of the game and 15th of the season. It was also her fifth game-winner which breaks Asheville's single-season record for most game-winning goals. Emily Langill had four game winners last season. VMI (7-10, 1-5 Big South) tied the match 2-2 with just two seconds remaining in regulation as Alexa Bernas scored her 15th goal of the year on a header in front of the goal.
The Keydets opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Colleen Redmond headed a ball over the head of Asheville goalkeeper Michelle Mattos. VMI held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs took the lead with two goals in two minutes in the second half. Robyn Busha scored her 12th goal of the year with a header off a Juliana Duncan corner kick in the 80th minute. McKay scored her first goal of the day unassisted in the 82nd minute as she beat the keeper with a blast from 15 yards out.
Asheville out-shot VMI 26-9 taking 16 shots in the second half. McKay put seven of her 10 shots on net. Busha and Joy Haynes assisted on McKay's game winner in overtime.
The Bulldogs will step out of conference to play at Longwood on Sunday in at 2 p.m. match.
