ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville won its school-record 11th straight match by defeating Big South Conference rival Charleston Southern, 3-1 Friday night at Justice Center. Asheville won the match 30-22, 30-20, 29-31, 30-23.
The Bulldogs (13-2, 2-0 BSC) were led by junior outside hitter Elif Unlu who enjoyed an outstanding match. She had 20 kills in 42 attempts and hit .429 for the match. Unlu added 22 digs. Sophomore Ashley Wrightenberry finished with 11 kills and 12 blocks. The Bulldogs had 16 blocks for the match. Rose Butler added 13 kills. Asheville also had Krysti Havens with 21 digs, while Talia Ogle chipped in 13 digs.
Charleston Southern (5-9, 0-2 BSC) was led by Victoria Owens with 14 kills and 17 digs. Erin Wicker finished with 14 kills, while setter Katie O'Riordan record a triple-double with 12 kills, 11 digs and 43 assists.
"Elif Unlu had a great match for us tonight," commented Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "This was a good win over a scrappy Charleston Southern team that wouldn't quit. I thought Ashley Wrightenberry did a great job blocking."
The Bulldogs trailed for much of the first game before going on a 11-1 run to pull the game out, 30-22. Unlu had seven kills in the opening game.
Asheville dominated the second game as it went on a 13-2 run to roar to a 24-13 lead. UNCA coasted to the 30-20 second game victory.
The third game had Charleston Southern leading for most of the game before a Bulldog rally led by Wrightenberry and Unlu put the Bulldogs in front, 29-27. But the Lady Bucs would not go down without a fight and stunned the Justice Center crowd by scoring the next four points to win, 31-29.
Asheville quickly took control of the fourth game as it broke an 8-8 tie with by going on a 12-3 run to lead 30-21. CSU could get no closer than seven the rest of the way. The Bulldogs blocking was very good in the final game as Allison Lambert and Wrightenberry combined for 10 blocks.
UNC Asheville hosts Big South rival Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., while Charleston Southern travels to Birmingham-Southern for a 2 p.m. CST Big South match.
