ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior forward Hilary McKay became UNC Asheville's all-time leading scorer as the Bulldogs recorded a 4-0 non-conference win over Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
McKay scored Asheville's first goal and final goal to push her career total to 40 goals, one past Mackenzie Miller. The Candler native has four goals on the season in two matches.
Freshman forward Robyn Busha scored the other two goals for the Bulldogs (2-0-0). She scored both her goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to help give Asheville a 3-0 lead.
The win was the 100th career victory for Asheville head coach Michele Cornish. She is now 100-83-15 in her 12 years at UNCA.
"We did a nice job finishing today," commented Cornish. "I thought we played very well on both offense and defense. We still have work to do but today was a nice effort against a well-coached Tennessee Tech team."
The Bulldogs have won their first two matches in the season for the first time since the 1998 season. Senior goalkeeper Mich Mattos earned her second shutout of the season by stopping three shots. It was the 14th of her career.
McKay scored late in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Stephanie Feltis chipped a pass to the senior forward who scored from 10 yards out for her 39th career goal at the 40:55 mark.
Asheville made it 2-0 in the first two minutes of the second half. Sara Pahl stole a ball from Tennessee Tech at midfield. She sent a pass to Busha, who blasted a shot in from 20 yards at 46:48.
Busha scored her second goal of the match eight minutes later. Tech goalkeeper Loretta McNamee and Busha collided going after a ball from 20 yards out. The freshman forward was able to get the ball first and she was able to kick the ball in from there. The ball hit the goal-post first but bounced into the goal.
McKay scored at the 89:59 mark to break the record. She picked up a loose ball and booted it in from 30 yards out.
Asheville controlled the match as it outshot the Golden Eagles, 15-7. Danielle Parrott led Tech with two shots on goal.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play next at Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 6) at 5 p.m.
