ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet Cone has announced that head men's and women's tennis coach Chase Hodges has resigned to take the head men's tennis position at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
"We are sorry to lose Chase but this is an excellent opportunity for him," stated Cone. "Chase has done a great job with both our men's and women's tennis programs. Both of our programs have become very competitive under his leadership. We wish Chase nothing but the best at Drake University."
Hodges came to UNCA in the summer of 2002 after spending a year as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Longwood University. He has directed the Bulldog men's tennis team to three straight winning seasons and the women's team to two straight winning campaigns. This past year, the UNCA men's team set a school record for wins with 16 and advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament. In 2004, he directed the Bulldogs to 15 wins and a national ranking of 64.
The UNCA women's team also prospered under Hodges. The Bulldogs finished with an 11-8 mark in 2005 and set a school record for wins in 2004 with 13. In 2003, he guided the Bulldogs to a 7-10 record; six more wins than the team had the previous season.
"We are going to look at several options to fill Chase's position," commented Cone. "We hope to move quickly and continue the success we have had in tennis the past three years under Chase Hodges."
