ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Head Women's Basketball Coach Betsy Blose announced the signing of 5-11 forward Jessica Monroe on Monday completing her 2005 recruiting class.
Monroe averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals for Franklinton High School in Youngsville, N.C. She was named the team's MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.
"We are delighted Jessica has chosen UNC Asheville as the school to continue her education. She is an exceptional young lady, a good student, and she will bring versatility and athleticism to our program. Her greatest strengths are rebounding and defense. Jessica has the ability to alter shots and deflect passes on defense that will bring a different dimension to our program," said Blose.
Monroe joins Ana Baker, 5-6 guard from Odenton, Maryland; Tyronnica "Wudi" Alford, 5-8 guard from Thomasville, N.C.; and Tasha Branch, 6-1 junior college transfer from Junction City, Kansas.
Asheville will return seven letter-winners and a red-shirt freshman from last season's 18-12 team that played for the Big South Championship for the first time in seven years last season. The Bulldogs will open the 2005-06 season by hosting the Carolina First Classic on November 18-19, at the Justice Center. The tournament will feature UNC Asheville as well as Campbell, Jacksonville, and Norfolk State.
