ROCK HILL, S.C. - Rob Nunnery and Mauricio Correa each picked up victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles but in the end, top-seeded Winthrop was able to hold on for a 4-2 semi-final victory over UNC Asheville at the Big South Tennis Championships on Friday.
Winthrop won the doubles point and then took victories at Numbers one, two, and three singles to advance to Saturday's conference final against either Birmingham-Southern or Charleston Southern.
Asheville finishes the season with a 16-5 season record. The 16 victories are the most ever by a UNCA tennis team.
"We were not strong in doubles this morning and losing that was a key point in the match. We battled a very good team today and even though its disappointing to lose we had a successful season and have a lot to be proud of," said Asheville head coach Chase Hodges.
