ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Freshman right-hander Alan DeRatt picked up his first victory of the year as UNC Asheville defeated North Carolina A&T, 7-2 in non-conference college baseball action at Greenwood Field Thursday afternoon.

DeRatt (1-5) pitched seven strong innings, scattering five hits, allowing one unearned run, striking out two and walking none. The Bulldogs (9-16) were led at the plate by senior Josh Coyle, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. The Aggies fell to 12-20 on the season.

Asheville scored a run in the first inning when Kevin Mattison reached on a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on North Carolina A&T's second error of the inning.

The Bulldogs made it 2-0 in the third on Tony Wall's sacrifice bunt. The Aggies scored an unearned run in the fifth on Phillip Brewington's sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1.

Asheville got bases loaded walks from Joe Pellington and Evan Dawson in the sixth to build the lead to 4-1. A&T's Charlie Gamble scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to narrow the lead to 4-2.

The Bulldogs put the game away in the eighth with three runs. Coyle's clutch two-run single with two outs pushed the lead to 6-2. Dawson scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch.

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Stewart pitched the final two innings for Asheville to earn his second save of the season.

The Bulldogs play their first home Big South Conference series of the year this weekend. UNCA was scheduled to begin its three-game series with High Point on Friday but due to inclement weather scheduled for the Asheville area on Friday, the series has moved to Saturday, Sunday and Monday. First pitch for the Bulldogs and Panthers on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. On Sunday, the teams will play at 1 p.m., followed by Monday's game starting at 2 p.m.
