ROCK HILL, S.C. - Torrell Martin connected on two key three-pointers to spark a 14-4 second-half Winthrop run as the Eagles defeated visiting UNC Asheville 67-60 Monday night in the Winthrop Coliseum.
Winthrop started one for nine in the opening five minutes, but came alive in the second-half connecting on 64 percent (14 of 22) from the field to finish the game shooting 51 percent. Head coach Gregg Marshall pulled the starting five after going down 8-2 in the opening six minutes. The reserves went on an 8-3 run to give the Eagles life in the first half.
Winthrop (17-5, 8-1) outlasted two UNCA (8-14, 5-6) runs in the second half and countered with its own closing the game on a 9-3 run over the last two minutes to claim the victory.
Martin's game-high 19 points, 16 in the second half, led three Winthrop players in double figures. Otis Daniels scored 13 points and Billy Houston added 12. James Shuler dished out six assists and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
UNCA kept itself in the game from behind the arc as the Bulldogs connected on 45 percent (9 of 20) of its 3-point attempts. The Bulldogs were led by Chad Mohn and Bryan McCullough with 14 points each. Mohn pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
