ANNAPOLIS, Md - Andrea Clapp scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead UNC Asheville to a hard-fought 52-47 victory over Morehead State in the consolation game of the Sheraton Barcelo Navy Classic Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (5-5) won for the fifth time in the last six games but had to work hard to win this contest. The Eagles (2-7) went on a 19-0 run early in the game to roar to a 21-3 lead. However, UNCA fought back with a 17-4 run to cut the lead to 25-20 and trailed by just one at 29-28 at halftime.
The Bulldogs took the lead midway through the second half and held on to get the victory. UNCA led 50-47 late in the game when Morehead State had a chance to get a tie on a 3-pointer. However, the Eagles turned the ball over and Velinda Vuncannon hit two free throws with four seconds left to seal the victory at 52-47.
Kristal Hood added 10 points for the Bulldogs. Senior guard Lindsey Roche had a happy homecoming with eight points and two steals. Roche, from nearby Riva, Md., knocked down two 3-pointers in the game.
UNCA also got six points and three rebounds from Leslie Young in the victory. The Bulldogs won despite shooting just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the field. However, they did a great job from the free throw line as Asheville went 13-of-14 from the charity stripe for 92.9 percent. The Bulldogs were a perfect 6-of-6 from the line in the second half.
Amanda Elder added four points, pulled down six rebounds, had four assists and blocked two shots.
UNCA will have a week off for Christmas and play next at home against Gardner-Webb at Justice Center on Dec. 30 starting at 7 p.m.
