UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone announced June 15, 2017 the hiring of Mitchell Miegel as an Assistant Director of Communications.
"We are really excited to have Mitchell Miegel join our External Relations team here in the UNC Asheville athletics department," UNC Asheville Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Brian Hand said. "Mitchell enters his new position bringing in a strong background to our team that will help us continue to promote the strong and always growing UNC Asheville brand the right way over the upcoming years."
Miegel joins the UNC Asheville athletics department after spending the last two athletic years as an Athletics Media Relations Graduate Assistant at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.
"I am blessed to be given this opportunity here at UNC Asheville and I am excited to be part of the Bulldog family," Miegel said. "I want to say how appreciative I am of Janet Cone as well as the athletic communications staff - Brian Hand and Milledge Austin - in giving me this chance to develop at a program that is making a name for itself on a national level. I would also like to thank ETSU and Berry College along with its athletic communications staffs for helping me receive this position in Asheville."
During his time at ETSU, Miegel served as the primary contact for the Buccaneer baseball, men's soccer, women's golf, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field teams.
In addition, Miegel assisted with all of the day-to-day and gameday operations of the Athletics Media Relations department at ETSU.
Miegel also helped start a Premier Development League (PDL) team while in Johnson City as the Assistant General Manager for the Tri-Cities Otters Futbol Club. He managed and oversaw a group of three while with the Otters, while also helping to create and design the Tri-Cities FC website, OtterSoccer.com.
The Roswell, Ga. native served as the Student Sports Information Assistant for NCAA Division III Berry College before taking his position at ETSU. During his time with the Vikings, Miegel was a liaison for all 21 teams and helped in a variety of roles from gameday stats to public address and video/music operations. He also held two academic internships with the football and baseball teams while at Berry College.
Miegel commenced his career in sports originally by interning with the Rome Braves where he gained experience with both the ticket office and press operations. He worked with the Assistant General Manager to create pre-game notes and write post-game write-ups after each game. Miegelalso helped to schedule mid-inning entertainment for the Rome Braves.
Miegel completed his Master's Degree in Kinesiology and Sports Studies with a focus in Sports Management in May of 2017. He finished his undergraduate studies at Berry in 2015 by obtaining a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Exercise Science with a Minor in Chemistry.
