Kim Cannon is in her seventh year as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville, bringing a strong background as both a collegiate athlete and coach. A native of Asheville, North Carolina, Cannon earned both their undergraduate and master’s degrees from Western Carolina University.
Cannon competed for Western Carolina from 2010–15 in the throwing events, specializing in the javelin. During their collegiate career, they were a two-time All-Southern Conference selection in the javelin.
Since joining the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, Cannon has played a key role in the development of Asheville’s throwers. She coached Solomon McDonald to the 2022 Big South men’s indoor shot put championship and guided McDonald to two NCAA regional appearances. Cannon has also coached the school record holders in both the indoor and outdoor shot put for men (Solomon McDonald) and women (Raina Jackson). Most recently, Cannon coached Jaelyn Arnold to a third-place finish in the women’s shot put at the 2025 Big South Outdoor Championships.
