UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone recently announced the hiring of Alexander Achorn as the Director of Marketing and Fan Engagement.
"We could not be more excited to have Alexander Achorn join our team here at UNC Asheville," UNC Asheville Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations Brian Hand said. "We here at UNC Asheville have admired Alex's work over the past couple of years, and we are thrilled that he is bringing his top-notch expertise as well as his high-level energy and enthusiasm to our athletics department."
Achorn joins the UNC Asheville athletics department after spending the last couple of years as the Director of Marketing, Promotions and Game Presentation at fellow Big South institution Gardner-Webb.
During his time with the Runnin' Bulldogs, Achorn helped increase attendance at Garnder-Webb by over 90 percent. He also launched the "Top Dawg" student rewards program that vastly increased student attendance at Runnin' Bulldogs athletic events by over 170 percent. Achorn's efforts with student promotion helped Gardner-Webb win its first-ever "Best Of" award from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA).
Achorn finished his time at Gardner-Webb having also earned his Master of Business Administration in Marketing.
Prior to joining Gardner-Webb, Achorn also spent time at Akron and Bryant. As the Director of Marketing and Promotions at Bryant, Achorn helped the Bulldogs finish with the top attendance in baseball, softball, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse in the Northeast Conference. He also helped evolve the Bryant basketball student section to become a finalist for Naismith Student Section of the Year and to an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Sixth Fan School Pride competition.
Achorn also worked with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx after finishing his undergraduate degree at the University of Miami in Miami, Fla. where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Education, Sports Administration and Marketing. While a student at Miami, Achorn was the Basketball Chair of the "Category 5 Spirit Programming Board" and he founded "Storm Surge," which was the official student section for Miami men's and women's basketball games.
"I am excited to join the Bulldog family here at UNC Asheville," Achorn said. "UNC Asheville boasts a lively student body, a supportive community, successful sports programs and provides a great opportunity to create one of the best fan bases in the conference. Janet R. Cone, Brian Hand and the rest of the athletics staff have done a tremendous job growing and promoting the athletics programs and I am blessed to have the ability and the support to contribute to the successes of the department. I am also very appreciative of the Bryant Bulldogs and the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs for allowing me to grow and develop as an athletics marketer (along with helping me familiarize myself with the Bulldog name) and am thankful for an opportunity to remain in the Big South Conference."
